@justiceforbarb with regards to work rates, yes I've questioned the same. The specific RB I mentioned in the OP had high attacking workrate. However, three things should have trumped this:

Team instruction set to Ultra D

Specific player instruction set to "stay back..."

Team tactics set on low passing - he bombed away from every other player on the pitch.

He has dified three major instructions, never mind the logic behind doing this 3-2 with five minutes to go. I can only deduce that workrates trump any instructions. Thereby leading me to question the value or indeed purpose of having instructions at all. Surely it would be better not to have stay back as an option and simply choose RB/LB's that have low attack workrates? There aren't any in the game. They doesn't exist.

It empitomises what is wrong with the game - a convoluted system that does not have the intelligence or ability to implement its own instructions. This is all over the gameplay.

Yep. It's the thing I most hate about the game is AI positioning because it seems to be nothing to do with anything. Just, like several things in this game, a randomly occurring factor.

I've moved on now for the summer. I'm going to give PES a good whirl and come October I'll decide where my money goes.

posted a message on AI manipulation

In the last 10 games I have lost about 5 to what we would call EAids. But looking closely at it, what I've see  is the way the AI pulls players out of position, often going against instructions and almost always resulting in a clear cut chance for the opposition to score.

I always play LB/RB on 'stay back whilst attacking'. In the last game I played, I was 3-2 up with five minutes left. I'd gone to ultra defensive and broke forward with the ball through the centre. I had a forward in front and a CAM to the side but as I look, I see my RB bombing forward. I stopped, turn on the ball and went back toward my own goal in an attempt to bring him back but he carried on running all the way to the opponents box. Had I lost the ball, my opponent would have played it into an absolutely free space. Luckily, this game I didn't. But in many games I have seen this shit take place. I'm currently playing with two CDM's and I have conceded goals where I have two players back, even five of them are set not to attack. I find my CDM's the furthest men up the pitch.

The AI is awful but worse, it's almost as if it purposefully pulls players out to make you vulnerable (I've no doubt it happens to my opponents as well). The fact that your instructions are ignored just negates the purpose of having instructions at all.

This weekend I've been playing PES on line and I can tell you this never happens. The AI are always ALWAYS where they should be.

There are many things in this game that irritate me but the AI positioning is the standout broken feature.

TLDR: the AI pull themselves out of position to open gaps and leave you vulnerable

@skillermoves. Completely agree on the inconsistent gameplay. It's atrocious. This last week, I'd had enough. Downloaded the trial edition of PES in which you can play MyClub (their FUT). The concept is a little convoluted but enjoyable and something that probably takes time to understand. It's not a patch on FUT in terms of idea BUT, the gameplay is phenomenally better. It's not even comparable. No dumb ass shit happening, especially with the AI.

When you set a back for to stay back and hold their line, do you know what they do, you'll never believe it, they actually fucking stay back. They actually follow the instructions you give them. What a bloody ridiculous idea.

Is it enough to make me switch? I'm not sure but what I can say is that I've had fun playing it, and I can't say I've had much fun this year on FIFA.

I was in the WL for the first time last weekend.

I better not share my results lol.

But I can say it was the first and last time in 17, I am back to Divisions (managed to stay in Div3 now and trying to get to Div2).

I have no idea where ppl find the time to play this every weekend.

I'm with you on that. I got in several months back and got gold 3 to qualify a second time but it was the most ridiculous slog. By the end of my second WL, I couldn't bare to put the game in my PS. I was utterly sick of playing. Not because of any BS but simply the game is not fun enough to keep me playing for 40 games over three days.

The worst is positioning yourself in the passing lane, not pressing any buttons, and watching your player auto lunge over the ball so it goes through your legs. The fuck...

There's no way to stop momentum, just learn the mechanic exploits, be better and more cool headed than your opponent when the bullshit kicks in.  Recognise when things are going against you and play safe.

This is true. I've gotten very angry at the game at it still flares from time to time but I'm learning to accept that it will happen and you cannot change that. EA will always deny it and some people will back them. Fair enough. I'm 99% that momentum exists. The best you can do is to play safe and quick, don't dally on the ball and don't try anything fancy because you will be absolutely punished for it

Just had the most arduous set of games. 97 pace players wading through mud. Two - three second delay of every pass, shot or throughball.

There are so many better players than me, why can't EA let me lose fairly and win fairly. I've managed to overcome some of the BS but my God. Feels like I've wasted an evening

Just came to release. Playing in a 0-0 where me and my opponent were cancelling each other out. My players doing fuck all but there was no way he was scoring. So the CPU did it for him. Two players run into each other in the box leaving the ball for a tap in

I don't delve too far into FUT beyond playing it. What are futties. I saw you could get a Chris smalling but he's exactly the same as his normal card. Surely there's something other than simply having a pink smalling?

Button delay also comes into this. You will lose all battles if you're suffering it and I firmly believe button delay is simply a form of scripting. It always kicks in when there's something on the line and it affects everything - shooting, passing, movment. It's impossible to play when you're hit by button delay.

posted a message on Stay back while attacking + balanced / defensive

Mate, I've asked the same question so many times. I'm finally (hopefully) getting to a point of acceptance with this game now. It's fucked. Lol, of course, what I mean to say is, there are no rules in FIFA. Consistency is a word that doesn't exist, Refs are inconsistent, button delay is inconsistent, the AI is abhorrently inconsistent and the team instructions are definitely inconsistent. I don't know why. I don't know if it happens on purpose or just completely at random but it happens and if you're going to keep playing this game, there is no point in questioning it because honestly, they are no answers.

I doff my cap to those who can play with getting frustrated or complaining and just accept the crap because I really struggle. I think there's a lot of good stuff in this game but it's not often you get to see it in amongst the errors and glitches and general chaos of play. The developers have been sucked into the FUT vortex and whilst they put an amazing amount of work into the sideshow of FUT, with the SBC's and challenges and so on, they sadly overlook glaring gameplay deficiencies. I don't expect this will change until they get significantly challenged by another competitor, which they will. How far off that will be, I've no idea but you can already see the complacency in their work and PES has been getting considerably stronger. Perhaps if PES 18 is another improvement and we have another year of same old same old from FIFA, people will start turning their heads. I think PES has to get to work on its online game because that's clearly where we're at in terms of football gaming.

I feel your pain but sadly there is no explanation beyond the haphazardness of the game mechanics.

posted a message on Gameplay update?

Yep. That's me for the day. I've only been playing DKT's this week, so maybe it's that because I almost never play them, but the gameplay has been horrible. I can play, it's as simple as that. Everything is hit by a two second delay, meaning tackles are late, shots don't get taken or get blocked. The clearest evidence came when I had a penalty shoot out. I press to dive, two seconds later the keeper dived. Three of them I went the right way but was too slow getting to them. To be honest, I didn't really care at that point. I've just been playing games out of boredom but I think I've had enough for the next few days now.
